The role of CODE-DE in the German government's application strategy
The national scope of CODE-DE and also EO-Lab, which is based on CODE-DE, is reflected in the central role that both projects play in the German government's national application strategy, a document with cabinet approval.
CODE-DE is named in the measure "COP-HF 1.2 Demand-oriented and long-term provision and further development of CODE-DE" of the application strategy as the central platform for the public sector in Germany, which enables fast and efficient access to Copernicus data and supports its processing in the cloud.
The declared aim is to provide the service in the long term and to continuously improve it in order to meet the needs of users.
It also refers to the planned merger of CODE-DE with the AI-focused platform EO-Lab. Users will be given the opportunity to exchange application examples and software tools, while close integration with other platforms and additional data sources will be ensured. High-resolution remote sensing data from the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy will be made available to federal institutions free of charge. The measures support the key project of the German space strategy “Cloud platforms for climate and environmental data”.
Specific goals set out in the German government's National Application Strategy:
- Users can easily find data and products available in the federal administration that are suitable for them and process them for their tasks. This ensures a high level of transparency and reusability of products, tools and applications.
- The development of products based on Copernicus will also be possible in the future using and on CODE-DE in a secure and long-term manner.
- The planned merger of CODE-DE and EO-Lab will increase the use of AI methods.
