Processor: Sentinel-1: Terrain-corrected backscatter

The Sentinel-1: Terrain-corrected backscatter processor creates geocoded and terrain-corrected radar backscatter information derived from Sentinel-1 data also referred to as CARD-BS (Copernicus Analysis Ready - Backscatter) data. CARD-BS products allow analyses of image-to-image variability and the detection of changes in land cover. The processor makes use of several modules of the SNAP toolbox provided by ESA.

On the CODE-DE platform by default all Sentinel-1 L2 GRD datasets over Germany are terrain corrected using this processor, for all other areas the pre-installed Sentinel-1: Terrain-corrected backscatter processor can be applied on individual demand via the CODE-DE Data Explorer.

Processor details

  • Input data:
    • Sentinel-1 L2 GRD IW in all polarizations
    • Sentinel-1 L2 GRD EW in all polarizations
  • Other data used for processing:
    • Precise Sentinel-1 satellite orbit information from ESA
    • SRTM DEM in 1x1 degree tiles
  • Methodology: Detailed information can be found in the links below.

Access and use

Depending on the environment and intended use, there are the following possibilities to execute the processing:

  • EO Browser: -
  • Data Explorer:
    • Data Catalogue: CODE-DE or CREODIAS
      • Search and select required Sentinel-1 L1 GRD input data -> Add to Workspace
    • Go to Workspace - > Select required datasets and Add to processing center -> Go to Processing center
    • Select processor: Sentinel-1: Terrain-corrected backscatter
    • Select required datasets and Create processing order
    • Progress of orders can be monitored in Processing status
    • The processed data is added to the CODE-DE data catalog in the Sentinel-1 CARD-BS collection and can be used in the same way as the CARD-BS data generated by default.

Usage requirements

There are certain requirements that must be met for use. Some data or services require an individual application. For more information, please contact CODE-DE Support.
