Processor: SNAP-C2RCC

The C2RCC (Case 2 Regional Coast Colour) processor allows water constituents in coastal or inland water bodies to be derived from optical satellite data. It can be applied to all past and current ocean colour sensors as well as Sentinel 2.

Retrieval of water constituents, or its optical properties, requires inversion of the water leaving reflectance spectrum, measured at top of atmosphere by satellites in the reflective wavelength range. This is particularly complex for coastal or inland waters. The C2RCC (Case 2 Regional CoastColour) processor allows water constituents in these water bodies to be derived from optical satellite data. The processor uses a large database of radiative transfer simulations inverted by neural networks as basic technique. It has been validated in various studies and is also implemented in SNAP.

The C2RCC processor relies on a large database of simulated water leaving reflectances, and related top-of-atmosphere radiances. Neural networks are trained in order to perform the inversion of spectrum for the atmospheric correction, i.e. the determination of the water leaving radiance from the top of atmosphere radiances, as well as the retrieval of inherent optical properties of the water body.

On CODE-DE the processor has been implemented for Sentinel-2 data and is integrated in the Data Explorer.

Access and Use

Depending on the environment and the intended use, there are several ways to apply the processor:

  • EO-Browser: -
  • Data Explorer:
    • Data Catalogue: CODE-DE or CREODIAS
    • Search and select required Sentinel-2 L1C input data -> Add to Workspace
    • Go to Workspace - > Select required datasets and Add to processing center -> Go to Processing center
    • Select processor: Sentinel-2: SNAP-C2RCC
    • Select required datasets and parametrize processor (see section below)
    • Create processing order
    • Progress of orders can be monitored in Processing status
    • The processed data will be available in a private S3 bucket or ready for download via the Data Explorer.
  • On a Virtual Machine: SNAP-C2RCC is part of the SNAP toolbox, which can be installed by the user or is readily installed within the OSGeoLive image.

Parametrization of the C2RCC processor in Data Explorer

In the Data Explorer input mask the processing order can be specified in more detail by opening the “Edit optional workflow options” menu.

In the first section users can select different data catalog options for input data (all entries starting with “source” or “input”).

Note: Do NOT change this section. Only default settings are operational at the moment!

In the second section (red area in the image below) the output storage and output format can be chosen . The processor output can either be stored in the user’s private S3 storage bucket or a temporary storage space provided by CODE-DE. For the use of S3 Object Storage see also https://knowledgebase.code-de.org/en/latest/s3/s3.html.

In the third section (indicated in blue below) the processor can be constrained by adding a priori input information provided by databases or in-situ measurements like water salinity, temperature and others. For more information consult the publications on C2RCC and see the SNAP online help at https://step.esa.int/main/doc/online-help/.
