Sentinel-1 L3 BS - Monthly Composite
This Sentinel-1 L3 collection contains one composite in VV and VH polarization for each month from terrain-corrected Sentinel-1 data (Sentinel-1 L2 BackScatter) over Germany. The composite is created by averaging all Sentinel-1 L2 BackScatter data and is usually available 5 days after the end of the month.
The data are very suitable for a monthly overview of the development of a certain area without being influenced by cloud and lighting effects.
Details
For this monthly composite, the terrain corrected data (Sentinel-1 L2 BackScatter) from one month are collected, averaged and integrated into a new data set.
To allow easy combination with Sentinel-2 data and especially with the monthly composite of Sentinel-2 data, the Sentinel-1 data within a tile is additionally mosaiced and clipped to the Sentinel-2 tile.

Processing details
- Input data: Sentinel-1 L2 BackScatter data (IW mode)
- The following steps are performed for each polarization:
- All Sentinel-1 L2 BackScatter data in IW mode within one S2 tile and within one month are used. This is typically about 40-50 scenes.
- All data areas that extend beyond the selected S2 tile are clipped.
- In all overlapping areas of the Sentinel-1 L2 BackScatter scenes the average value of the pixels is calculated.
- Resampling to 10 m x 10 m
- The data is logarithmized and the resulting dB values are converted into a file in COG format.
