Virtual Machines

Virtual machines (VMs) are fully functional computer instances. They function as if they were real physical units with all the elements of a real computer. A user receives his VM with full root access. He can fully manage it and install any software he has and needs. On CODE-DE, users can configure and customise their VMs by defining various parameters and features, such as machine type (physical or virtual), RAM, CPU (vCores), memory amount and type, operating system, middleware components or virtual networks connected to the machine. CODE-DE also offers GPUs as a possible extension to the virtual processing environment.

Details

CODE-DE provides access to cloud computing and storage resources via virtual machines. Each user can configure and set up virtual machines - after allocating a quota - which they can then use for their activities. Each VM operates separately from other instances with its own operating system. Users have complete autonomy and full administration rights for their instances. Access to the virtual machines is managed exclusively by the owner (user) of the instance, ensuring security and full data protection.

Virtual machines (VMs) allow users to set up and run their processes as they would on a traditional workstation. Once configured, the instance can run software and execute processes in the same way as a PC. In addition, VMs can host front-end applications that are accessible online or serve as a secure sandbox for testing applications.

When configuring and customising a VM, the user has the option to define a set of characteristics that determine the instance's capabilities, access options and functionalities. To support users, CODE-DE offers predefined pools of variants - so-called flavours - and instance images to choose from.

Available flavors

To support a variety of processes and requirements, CODE-DE offers a predefined set of images with the most common operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2019
  • Preinstalled software: QGIS, SNAP, R, Python, Notepad++, IfranView, S3Browser, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and GIT
  • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
  • CentOS 7
  • OSGeoLive 14.0 + TensorFlow

Usage requirements

There are certain requirements that must be met for use. Some data or services require an individual application. For more information, please contact CODE-DE Support.
